About Alaska Federation in Music Clubs
Rooted in Alaska. Lifted by music.
AKFMC is a statewide music teacher organization and NFMC state affiliate, offering non-competitive festivals in Soldotna, Seward, and Anchorage, virtual submissions statewide. Students receive comments, earn ribbons, certificates, and work toward trophies
The Alaska Federation of Music Clubs (AKFMC) is a nonprofit organization serving one of the most geographically vast and sparsely populated regions in the United States. Alaska spans an area larger than Texas, California, and Montana combined, yet fewer than two people per square mile call this state home. Despite the challenges of distance, travel, and isolation, our teachers remain deeply committed to providing meaningful music education and nationally recognized performance opportunities for students across Alaska.
Most of our members are currently based in Southcentral Alaska, particularly on the Kenai Peninsula, with outreach extending as far as the remote Aleutian Islands. Through our affiliation with the National Federation of Music Clubs (NFMC), AKFMC proudly hosts an annual Gold Cup Festival featuring both in-person and online adjudication options to serve students throughout our geographically diverse state. Our Gold Cup Event Chair and chief organizer, Mark Weathers, is also a founding member of the organization.
In addition to NFMC membership, many of our teachers are also active members of the Music Teachers National Association and the Alaska Music Teachers Association. As our organization continues to grow, several members have earned the prestigious Nationally Certified Teacher of Music (NCTM) designation through MTNA. Our president, Lynda Lybeck-Robinson, currently serves as Alaska’s State Chair for National Certification and welcomes inquiries from teachers interested in professional growth and certification.
As we continue expanding our reach statewide, we enthusiastically welcome members from all regions of Alaska. Due to the unique challenges and modest population of our state, collaboration and community are at the heart of everything we do.
Our enthusiasm knows no bounds. Alaska’s students and teachers often face remarkable logistical and geographic obstacles, yet we continue to persevere, create, perform, and celebrate through the transformative power of music.
